Tengai, known as Tengai Kanou (狩野天外, かのうてんがい, kanou tengai) is a playable guest character. He is unique as he is a 50 year old Japanese Buddhist wandering monk on top of a big white bird. Tengai himself comes from Psikyo's 1993 shmup game Sengoku Ace (戦国エース), also called Samurai Aces outside of Japan.
Description[]
Tengai is a character with an unusual playstyle. Most of his power comes from up close, making him almost melee-oriented. His movement speed is slightly below average.
Unlike other guest fighters, Tengai is not an exact representation of his original appearance in Sengoku Ace.
Special ability[]

Loadout[]
Laser weapon[]
Juuman Boruto: Tengai fires powerful bolts of lightning forward. This weapon has a slow rate of fire due to its high damage.
Missile weapon[]
Juzu Kourin: Tengai summons rotating rings of prayer beads straight ahead towards enemies. The rings follow Tengai's horizontal position, like the Juuman Boruto. Before being released, the rings rotate around Tengai, serving as a shield against weak enemies.
Bomber[]
God Bird: Tengai commands his bird mount to generate a giant firebird and shoot it forward. Tengai is immobile for a moment after using this Bomber. It has a 5-second cooldown time. Using this attack on top of a boss can deal massive damage. God Bird is similar in function to the Samurai Sword special attack from the Strikers 1945 series.
Slaves[]
Yari Spear Slaves: Tengai summons two different yari spears with yin-yang symbols as auras, flanking Tengai at either side as a Slaves. Which yari spear Tengai receives is random, and he can have only one of each at the same time. They behave just like normal Slaves, including assuming special Raiden Fighters formations.

Trivia[]
- Tengai is a spriteswap of Zapdos. Zapdos was removed during the Game Maker Studio port in early 2020. The primary concern is about Nintendo and The Pokémon Company International's litigiousness regarding fanmade games using their IPs. The other concern is that, even without the litigation issue, Pokémon should not take up any roster spots over actual shmup representations.
- The names of Tengai's Laser weapon and Bomber are the Japanese names of the same weapons that Zapdos had, which are based on moves that Zapdos learns in the core Pokémon games. The Thunderbolt move in Japanese is known as juuman boruto (10万ボルト) or "100,000 Volts", while Sky Attack is known as goddo baado (ゴッドバード).
- The Laser weapon still uses the Pokémon Red/Blue sound effect for the Wrap move.
- The Missile weapon's name (in Japanese: 数珠光輪) translates to "Japamala Halo". A japamala is a string of prayer beads commonly used in Indian religions such as Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Buddhism for the spiritual practice (sadhana) known in Sanskrit as japa. In Japanese Buddhism, the japamala is known as ojuzu (数珠, counting beads) or onenju (念珠, thought beads). The former name of the Missile weapon misspelled the Romaji for onenju (as Oneju). The name Juzu Kourin[1] is the same name of his subweapon in Sengoku Ace.
- Tengai's bird mount is a white spiritually charged falcon named Zenjirou (善次郎)[1].
